Frank Oz's funny, user-friendly comedy about a small-town teacher who is publicly "outed" as gay by a former student on national television. The timing couldn't be worse -- he's about to wed his longtime fiancee. Kevin Kline, Joan Cusack and Tom Selleck are all superb in the first big comedy hit of the fall season. Paramount. Rated PG-13, with profanity, mild violence, and discussion of sexual issues.

Richard Attenborough's old-fashioned, overly contrived telling of the romance that supposedly occurred between 18-year-old Ernest Hemingway and the 26-year-old woman who nursed him back to health in an Italian hospital during World War I. The romance was said to have influenced Hemingway's later novel A Farewell to Arms. Sandra Bullock is appealing as the nurse; Chris O'Donnell has a more difficult challenge, recreating the larger-than-life Hemingway. New Line. Rated PG-13, with violence and brief nudity.
